Elon Musk and his business SpaceX have grandiose plans to construct a huge, flourishing permanent colony on Mars. And they plan to accomplish this goal in the not too distant future. This metropolis will be able to support its own operations and has the potential to be home to approximately one million people, as per current estimates and theories.
In order for such a city to be fully self-sufficient; it will need to have a diverse group of people from all walks of life, living in it. It won’t be enough for a city like this to just have a few bunch of people like billionaires, scientists and engineers.
Musk, like many other people, is convinced that in order for our species to have any chance of long-term survival, we need to figure out how to get off of Earth and discover alternative safe havens among the stars. Mars, being our nearest and most habitable neighbour, would constitute a good first step towards colonising other planets. It is not that far away, and there is mounting evidence that suggests it may once have been habitable at some point in the past. If that’s the case, as Musk seems to think, it may happen again.
If SpaceX’s plan to build a city on Mars were to become a reality, it would unquestionably be a significant technical achievement. It would also represent a significant step toward ensuring the survival of our species for the next thousands or millions of years. People like Musk undoubtedly feel that it is a goal that is well worth pursuing, despite the fact that getting there will not be an easy voyage.
According to individuals like Musk, such an endeavour will be essential for the long-term survival of our species and may be seen as an insurance plan, for all upcoming generations of humans to come. Musk believes that it will also provide our civilization with a long-term objective, something that will motivate us all to work toward bigger goals for generations.
