Can We Replace a Car Ignition Switch On Our Own?
The ignition switch serves as an on/off switch. It is much more complex but this is its primary purpose. You insert the key into your ignition and turn it. This turns on the ignition switch, which depending on the vehicle will turn on a number of circuits, or send signals to the modules telling them to turn off. The switch can be found on the dashboard of your car or in the steering column. Besides starting your car, it also serves to route current to various accessories of your car such as radio, music system and lighting system, door control and so on.
Like all pieces of machinery, the ignition switch can also get defective over time. In such a case you may face problems with starting your car and various systems of it as well. Therefore you must take your car to the mechanic to get the switch replaced or repaired. But can you do it yourself?
An ignition switch is surely a complex piece of machinery, therefore it may be difficult for common people like you and me to repair it. But we can replace it. While replacing the switch, we don’t have to understand its mechanics or the way it functions. All we need to do is to detach the old switch and fix a new one in its place, which any common man who has some DIY skills can do.
To replace the ignition switch, first, you need to take out the steering of your car with the help of screwdrivers. Below the steering, you will see the ignition switch plugged with some wires. Remove the plugged wires and this will detach the switch from the car. Now you can attach the new switch by plugging the wires into it. After doing it, just put the steering back safely by fastening all the screws and you are ready to go.
