Kjellberg, who was born and raised in Gothenburg, Sweden, launched his YouTube channel “PewPieDie” in 2010, mostly featuring Let’s Play footage of horror and action video games. But over the next two years, his channel grew significantly in popularity, and he surpassed 1 million subscribers in July 2012. His content style evolved over time to include vlogs, satire videos and music videos.
On 15 August 2013, Kjellberg’s channel became the most-subscribed on YouTube. From 29 December 2014 to 14 February 2017, Kjellberg had the most-viewed channel on YouTube, and the channel is now the 23rd-most-viewed and sixth among those owned by a single person.
Kjellberg’s YouTube fame and widespread media attention have elevated him to the list of the most well-known web celebrities and content producers. Because of this popularity and media exposure, his coverage of indie games has had an Oprah effect, meaning a boost in sales of titles he plays. Also for this reason, Time magazine listed him as one of the world’s 100 most powerful individuals in 2016.
